Fall 2016

Greetings everyone!!

Well, before I could get the Summer newsletter out, Summer ended!!! So......here is the Fall news. This is going to be an exciting Fall.

JAZZ ENSEMBLES

We are pleased to announce the addition of ERNIE KRIVDA to our team. You can read his full bio on our instructors page at www.vancemusicstudios.com. Mr. Krivda and I will be running the jazz program at VMS starting this September. We are going to continue to run jazz rehearsals on a weekly basis as we have in the past, but with the following changes:

SCHEDULE-

All jazz classes will be on Monday Evenings, as follows:

6:30-7:30- Jazz Band

7:30-8:30- Improv Workshop

8:30-9:30- Jazz Band (adult)

*Mr. Krivda will also be available for private lessons on Monday afternoons before 6:30.

CLASSES-

The Jazz Band sessions will be similar to how they have been in the past, but with the addition of Mr. Krivda as a coach. We will also now be able to allow anyone that is interested to enroll at any time.

The Improv Workshop will be led by Ernie, and will cover the finer points of jazz improvisation. It is being offered between the band rehearsals in order to facilitate participation by all band members, but is also open to folks not participating in a band.

Each of these classes will be the same cost as a lesson ($24/per weekly session).

PERFORMANCES-

We are working on locating a venue where we can have a standing monthly gig, creating a realistic re-occuring performance goal. These performances will feature the jazz ensembles, Mr. Krivda and myself, and offer the possibility of an open jam session at the end of the night to further interact with each other as well as other area musicians. Admission to these performances is FREE. I have contacted several venues, and will notify everyone once we confirm.

ROCK BAND PROGRAM

After 10 years of running our ensemble program, I have decided to make some operational changes to the rock bands program. We have had many great concerts and a ton of great music has been produced. But, I feel with a few changes we can make the program even better by eliminating waiting lists, shortening the time commitment, & condensing the final goal.

Starting Fall of 2016 we will run our rock bands in 10 week sessions, culminating in a concert. Each 10 week session we will have the opportunity to form new groups, select new material & perfect it, and will be team taught by Tim Lane and myself along with some of our other instructors. Admission to the final concert will be FREE and open to the public. We will offer 3 sessions per year- Fall/Spring/Summer. Once bands are formed, rehearsals will be scheduled on Saturdays. Preexisting bands are welcome, as well as individuals. Material will be selected in turn by each band member.

The cost will be $285 per 10 week session.

FALL 2016 SESSION:

10/1- First Rehearsal

10/8- Rehearsal

10/15- Rehearsal

10/22- Rehearsal

10/29- Rehearsal

11/5- Rehearsal

11/12- Rehearsal

11/19- Rehearsal

11/26- OFF (Thanksgiving Weekend)

12/3- Rehearsal

12/10- DRESS Rehearsal

12/10- FINAL CONCERT

LIBRARY RECITAL

Saturday October 22nd in The Lakewood Library's Multi-Purpose Room from 1:30-4:00. If you are interested in performing, please let your instructor know as soon as possible. Admission is FREE.

PIANO STUDIO

I apologize for the piano instructor flip flop! Carey Viton left in a hurry, but luckily we had Dan Maier step up to the plate and add the lessons to his schedule through the Summer.

Starting this September we are adding DAN BAILEY to our roster. You can read his full bio on our instructors page at www.vancemusicstudios.com. Dan Maier will be available Mondays and Wednesdays, and Dan Bailey will be available Thursdays and Saturdays.

*If you are currently with Mr. Maier on Thursdays or Saturdays, please let us know if you would like to transfer to his M/W schedule or stay with Mr. Bailey at the same time. Mr. Bailey is taking over the Saturday schedule starting in September, and the Thursday schedule starting in October.

NEW INSTRUCTORS

In addition to the new instructors mentioned above, we also have DAN WENNINGER teaching sax lessons on Saturday afternoons, and CHRISTINE SHERLOCK giving viola lessons also on Saturday afternoons. In the brass department, we have STEVE MAGNI on Monday & Tuesday evenings, and FELIPE BRITO on Saturdays. You can read their full bios on our instructors page at www.vancemusicstudios.com.

SCHEDULING

Please be patient with us as we work through scheduling requests. I know I say this every Fall, but this is already the busiest Fall we have had to date.

ATTENDANCE/SCHEDULING POLICY REMINDER

Over the summer we were as flexible as possible, but going into Fall we need to tighten things up a bit. In order to be considered for a credit or a make-up, we need to receive notice before noon on the day of the lesson for weekday lessons and by 9pm the previous night for Saturday lessons. Also, credits & make-ups are limited to 5 per year.

HOLIDAY CLOSINGS

We will be closed:

LABOR DAY: Friday September 2nd through Monday September 5th.

THANKSGIVING: Wednesday November 23rd through Sunday November 27th.

WINTER BREAK: Monday December 19th through Sunday January 1st, 2017.

It has been a pleasure to work with everyone over the past 10 years, and I thank you all for making VMS a success. I hope many of you choose to participate in our new programs as well as look forward to working with many more new musicians. Thanks, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

-Chris Vance

It's hard to believe, but 10 years ago this month I rented one of these store fronts & threw a music stand, 2 chairs and an amplifier in it and started VMS. This concert is very special because it will also function as a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Clubs if America's Big Brothers & Big Sisters program (organized by our very own LOUIS SOURIS). A portion of all proceeds will be donated to this fine organization. We all remember (and miss) The Winchester from past events, and we are excited to occupy the space once again! It has been extensively remodeled and has been renamed The Bevy in Birdtown, located at 12112 Madison Avenue in Lakewood. Costumes are strongly encouraged- don't miss one of the most fun events of the year. $7 admission.

We would like to contratulate GENEVIEVE GILBERT (otherwise known as our violin instructor), who has landed a job as a full time music teacher at Luther Memorial School in Old Brooklyn. As a result she will only be operating the front desk on Saturdays, but her teaching schedule will remain the same. However, CHRIS SCOTT (otherwise known as our trumpet/brass instructor) will be on the job! In addition to myself and Kurt Wright (otherwise known as our in house guitar guru) we are in good hands.

Madison on the Move is the collective name for a number of projects that are ongoing along Madison Avenue. The next 24 months are going to be huge for Madison Avenue because the City is making a nearly $6 million dollar investment in corridor infrastructure. All though 2 lanes of traffic will be maintained throughout the resurfacing of the street, parking will be more scarce than usual. Please allow for extra time during construction. Our councilman has assured me that they will have completed this section of Madison by the first week of May- lets keep our fingers crossed! Thanks for your patience.

We are getting very excited about another great Spring & Summer here at VMS, and I would like to thank you all for being a part of it! Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any comments or questions.

-Chris Vance

WINTER 2014

Greetings Everyone:

All though a 'Polar Vortex' is an anti-climactic way to get things going again, we are off to a great start regardless. A few important things to note:

EVENTS:

VOSH STUDENT SHOWCASE- our next rock gig is scheduled on SATURDAY FEBRUARY 22nd 2014 at VOSH. We are excited to break in this new venue! Vosh is located at 1414 Riverside Drive in Lakewood, and features a full menu, full bar, and a wonderful stage. This show starts at 4:00pm, and will end promptly at 8:30pm. Admission is $7 at the door. Stay classy Lakewood.

STUDENT RECITAL- SATURDAY MARCH 22nd in LAKEWOOD LIBRARY'S MULTI-PURPOSE ROOM. 1:00pm-4:00pm, Free Admission. Please let your instructor know as soon as possible if you would like to participate.

CLEVELAND MINI MAKER FAIRE- VMS will be hosting a demonstration entitled "The Anatomy of a Jazz Trio" on SATURDAY MARCH 29th at this cool event. It will be held at The Cleveland Public Library from 10:00am until 6:00pm. Check out www.makerfairecleveland.com for more info.

LAKEWOOD LIBRARY'S FRONT PORCH CONCERT SERIES 2014- This year our bands will be playing on FRIDAY JULY 25th & FRIDAY AUGUST 1st from 7:00pm until 9:00pm. This will be the fifth year we have partnered with LakewoodAlive to bring a series of slick concerts to downtown Lakewood- our ensembles contributing along with other area professionals. Full schedule to come.

*All of your food donations at The Winchester on 12/14/13 were distributed to many Lakewood families that needed the support for the Holidays. Thanks for your generosity!!! You helped more than a few folks get through the Holidays.

STAY TUNED FOR MORE GREAT EVENTS!!

NEW INSTRUCTOR:

We are pleased to welcome Mr. PETE CAVANO to our teaching staff. An area legend, Pete brings over four decades of playing and teaching experience to the table, and one heck of a sense of humor to boot. You can read his bio on the 'instructors' page of our website, and check out the article The Cleveland Plain Dealer wrote about him below. Pete is currently available for lessons on Friday afternoons & early evenings.

CONSIDERING MAJORING IN MUSIC?:

This semester I have been asked to create a 'popular music ensemble' at Cleveland State University. This group is prefacing the launch of their new BA in POPULAR MUSIC degree track in the fall of 2014. The program will not only focus on the history, theory and performance of American popular music, but will also emphasize technology, marketing & business, and other more practical concerns in the modern music industry. Additionally, CHRIS SCOTT, JOE BONSIGNORE, and I are all currently adjunct faculty at TRI-C. TRI-C has an agreement with THE BERKLEE COLLEGE of MUSIC (in Boston, MA) to create a joint bachelor's degree in music.

If you are considering Music as a career, please talk to us about selecting the right school, audition preparation or one of the programs at these local institutions. Majoring in music doesn't mean you'll live in your parents basement forever!

SNOW DAYS:

Every year we are faced with the challenge of nasty weather. In the case we close due to weather (excessive snow or exceedingly low temperatures), we will call. Please do not assume we are closed just because the local schools are closed, and please make sure we have your current phone number.

OFFICE STAFF:

As many of you have noticed, my wife Shelly is no longer working the desk since she started her new job. The good news- GENEVIEVE GILBERT (also our violin instructor) has increased her hours, and we have added our guitar guru KURT WRIGHT to the desk team. Since they are both very knowledgeable musicians, we are in good hands.

Thanks everyone. Let us know if you have any questions, and check out our calendar for more info.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer. September 18th, 2013

2011 Lakewood Library Front Porch Concert Series

Meet Pete Cavano -- Cleveland's unsung guitar hero. He has mentored a Who's Who of the city's hottest musicians -- including Chris Allen, Anne E. DeChant, Austin 'Walkin' Cane' Charanghat, Mr. Stress and Wallace Coleman - and he was an early playing partner and friend of the late local blues legend Robert Lockwood Jr. The Chet Atkins Appreciation Society regularly invites him to perform at its showcase in Nashville each year, an honor that puts him among the best guitar players in the world. So why haven't you heard of him?

"If talent and knowledge equaled fame, then Pete Cavano would be world famous," said Charanghat, 43, who began taking lessons from Cavano when he was 17. "If there was any justice in this world, Pete Cavano would be a household name. That's how good he is," said Jorma Kaukonen, a guitarist with Jefferson Airplane. "You owe it to yourself to listen to him." Cavano has long struggled to shake off his low-key and self effacing manner. "I have always bragged to my wife that humility is one of my greatest attributes," he recently joked.

But he is as renowned for his teaching technique as he is for his prowess on the guitar. Allen, a local singer/songwriter, can tell you. "I took lessons from Pete when I moved back to Cleveland in 1997," said Allen. "I wanted to learn some pointers about fingerpicking. I thought I already knew how to play guitar. Pete taught me how little I knew. He is amazingly versatile. He can play so many styles. He's also so generous about giving away his tricks, and he's got a big bag of them."

Cavano, 61, is busier than ever in his career. He has 30 guitar students who range from beginners picking up the guitar for the first time to experienced professionals who are looking to fine-tune their musical game. "A lot of my students now are older people, middle-aged guys who played in high school and are looking to get back into it," Cavano said, with a banjo on his knee, at his home in Bay Village, where he lives with his wife Lurrie and two sons Aaron and Nolan. "What alarms me is that there has been a huge drop-off in students from middle school through high school trying to learn guitar. I think they are all playing computer games -- Minecraft or something. There's more instant gratification in those games. What's sad is that whole generation isn't going to have bands of its own to listen to."

Cavano grew up in Rocky River and received his first guitar at age 10. "That was it for me," he said. "I knew what I wanted to do and what I was going to be. I played guitar in my bedroom all the time. School was only a mild interruption in my guitar life. Your average guitar student takes about a year to get through instruction book one. I finished book one in three weeks" By age 15, Cavano had a job teaching beginners. "I was tall, so that helped make-up for how young I was," he said.

He graduated from St. Edward High School in 1970 and took some general classes at Cleveland State University, but mostly he played guitar. "Back then it was hard to find a college-level guitar course," he said. "I think music schools were discouraging it as an instrument. So I just wound up playing on my own."

Cavano married his wife in 1981, and the following year they took a trip to New Orleans for a blues festival. He saw Buddy Guy and Etta James perform, followed by New Orleans legend Professor Longhair. That was all it took for him and Lurrie to make plans to move to New Orleans permanently. While in the Big Easy, Cavano immersed himself in the music scene. The famous music venue Tipitina's was a block in one direction. Aaron Neville of the Neville Brothers lived a street over. Cavano could see Zydeco master Clifton Chenier on a weekly basis. Cavano worked a day job as a banquet manager for three years until the guitar gigs became more regular. But New Orleans had its problems, too. Crime and corruption were rampant. City planning experts from Tulane University wrote long articles each year about how the levy was going to break and a large part of the city would be destroyed. "I would look up and see a huge ship going by up above the city and think, that's not right. We should be looking down at that ship," Cavano said.

Ultimately, the Cavanos didn't want Aaron (named after Aaron Neville) -- and later Nolan -- to attend New Orleans' troubled city schools, so they returned to Northeast Ohio in 1987. Back in Cleveland, he hooked up with the Johnny Lambert and Full House band, which plays every style of popular music known to man. The diversity of styles honed Cavano's already wicked skills and went a long way toward making him a much sought-after sideman. "In the 25 years that I have performed, it is not so much particular magical nights of music that I remember, but rather, specific magical moments," said singer songwriter Anne E. DeChant, who now lives in Nashville. "When Pete Cavano is on stage with me, my potential for creating and experiencing those moments increases exponentially. Pete serves the song, not himself. In serving the song with such skill -- and I mean skill -- and trademark melodic style, Pete shines through without the self-indulgent personality that is the stuff of musicians who have lost sight of the big musical picture. Pete sees the big picture."

"Robert Lockwood Jr. did not hang out with hacks." Cavano treasures his friendship with Lockwood, who died in 2006. One of Cavano's many claims to fame is that he is the only musician that Lockwood entrusted with the original songbook of his stepfather Robert Johnson, a giant in the history of blues music. "I met Robert in 1972 or '73 at a club called the Flipside in Cleveland Heights. I was a dumb white kid from the suburbs who was hoping Robert might be able to show me an old watch of Robert Johnson's that he had hidden in a drawer somewhere. But we clicked and a relationship developed. Robert was a great guy." Cavano has played with lots of Cleveland bands in his career, including the Pete Cavano Trio with its "high-powered blues," the Aces and Eights blues band, the Jimmy Ley blues band and the jazz/blues/swing/pop Hollywood Slim Band.

Around the 1990s, he began to focus more on solo playing. He has weekly gigs in and around town. The Wednesday lunch hour finds him playing at the Arcade downtown. He does a Sunday brunch at the Mustard Seed Market & Cafe in Fairlawn. Folks in Aurora know him from the ThornCreek Winery, and he's also popular from his gigs at Gamekeepers in Chagrin Falls. Cavano will soon embark on a new a project, an album tentatively titled "Too Blue for You," a collection of duets with all of his Cleveland blues peeps. There's no doubt he'll get everyone he asks for, including local blues harpist Colin Dussault. "Pete is Cleveland's version of Chet Atkins, Les Paul, James Burton, Scotty Moore and Roy Nichols all rolled into one," said Dussault. "Pete is the consummate professional."

Vance Music Studios Summer Bands

Behind Syncopated Sin: Speakeasy 2.0's Jazz Band Creation Finds Success In Cleveland by NICOLE DELAMOTTE on JULY 8, 2011

2011 Lakewood Library Front Porch Concert Series

Chris Vance of Vance Music Studios agreed to lend his talents to IngenuityFest once again by putting together a group specifically for Speakeasy 2.0 - now their group is booked for shows all over Cleveland.

The Syncopated Sin Swing Jazz Band was created by Vance Music Studios' teachers to entertain crowds at Ingenuity's Speakeasy 2.0 fundraiser with a night of jazz and swing. Turns out, Syncopated Sin's expertise is fulfilling a specialty that is taking them to swing shows around the city. They just played two weeks ago at a swing dance at Bohemian National Hall on Broadway.

"There's a lot of bands around town that play swing but they don't do period '20s and '30s pieces," Vance says of his group's niche, "there's a lot of great jump blues bands, swing era bands, and there's a lot of good jazz bands but none of them really dial into the 20s, 30s, early 40s."

Despite jazz's foundation dating back to the '20s, Vance cites technology as a major influence in his band's practice: internet channels such as YouTube are essential in rediscovering and studying the classics played on vinyl. As a band of young musicians, Syncopated Sin's challenge is mastering these classics for modern audiences.

Say Vance on bridging the gap, "All of us are under 35, none of us were alive when Ellington or even Coltrane were a hit; we grew up in a whole different jazz culture. To pull it back out, it gives you a whole new perspective."

"Some of the tunes are the same as you'd do in a modern gig but you have to approach it totally different. 'Bye Bye Blackbird' -you can listen to Miles Davis play it, you can listen to Coltrane play it, but to play the 1920s version you have to strip it back. It's kind of cool to go backwards because you really see how jazz evolved."

The Syncopated Sin Swing Jazz Band is playing at Speakeasy 2.0 on July 15th and recognizes IngenuityFest as the reason they're adding more and more gigs. "We wouldn't have started if we didn't have the gig," Vance says, "We're all involved in so many different things to have a gig that's cool like this- a cool spot, for a good cause, it really helped us put it together. I don't think it would have happened if James [Ingenuity Director of Programming] hadn't given us that call. 100%, it revolved around Ingenuity Festival."

Vance Music Studios provides lessons for all ages and all levels, specializing in both private lessons and ensembles. It is located on 16426 Madison Ave, Lakewood, OH 44107. Chris Vance can be contacted for more information on Vance Music Studios and The Syncopated Sin Swing Jazz Band at 216-227-2886.
