Moser and John Stebal and Jr. Music Theory studies
with Dr. Charles Smith.
Chris has been
giving private lessons since 1993 in multiple Buffalo
and Cleveland locations- many of his former students
have gone on to music school (some with scholarships)
and many more have become active members of the local
music scene. On average, he has about 80 students
per week and plays 15-20 gigs per
month. Chris has consistently
been a prolific performer in both the classical and
jazz/rock realms throughout his career. He has been the
featured soloist on some of the most demanding classical
repertoire and has served as principal bass of the
Bermuda Symphony as well as the Buffalo Opera Company
Orchestra. Currently the bassist for avant-garde
jazz group Kassaba (www.kassaba.com), 15 60 75 (www.numbersband.com), Suddenly, Sharply, Midnight , The
Mercury’s featuring Hollywood Slim (who also helped
build the studio, appropriately named “The Hollywood
Slim Wing”), The Ricky Exton Quartet, Basscapes (solo
bass), Wallace Coleman, The John Stebal Trio, and his
own jazz group called Treeyo. He has served as a
substitute player for area orchestras as well as The
Mike Petrone Trio, Blue Lunch, Tommy Shaper, Michael
Civisca, Abundance, The Jay Epstein Trio, and Jerry
Bruno Productions, just to name a few. Featured on
recordings by Kassaba, Parallels and Cletus
Black.
In addition, Chris has had some
training as a string instrument repair/adjustment
technician. Formerly a shop adjuster for
Conn-Selmer's Stringed Instruments Division, Chris
currently works as a Specifications Consultant for the
company. He has also worked for Peter Zaret and

George Foley:

Introducing
Mr. George Foley. George began his piano studies
in the late 1960's with Andrius Kreprevicius, Joe Howard
and Howard Wittaker; theory and composition studies with
Peter Sinks. Later George went on to study music
at the College of Wooster. He has performed on the
Mississippi Queen (steam boat tours from New Orleans to
St. Paul), in various Ragtime festivals throughout North
America, numerous concerts locally (Cain Park, C.S.U.,
Tri-C, Cleveland Museum of Art, etc.) and is a major
facet of the local jazz and blues scene as a band
leader, solo pianist and a side man (The Night Owls and
The Mercury's). George also has three solo albums
out on the Stomp Off Records label- Love It (1985),
Smiles and Kisses (1989), and S'Wonderful (2001).
George has also been an active teacher throughout his
career, and we are excited to have him joining us here
at Vance Music Studios. You can read more about

Oksana Vignan:

Oksana Vignan, a native of
Ukraine, received her primary musical training at the
Ukrainian State Collage of Music. After immigrating to
Canada in 1996, Oksana completed her Bachelor of Music
in Piano Performance Degree at the University of
Windsor, Ontario. While studying at the U of W,
Oksana participated in numerous piano competitions,
music festivals, and piano recitals. She was a
recipient of a First Prize at the national level ORMTA
piano competition in Toronto in 2000 as well as a First
Prize Winner of the Silver Tray Prize at the national
level of the Kiwanis Music Festival in
Kitchener-Waterloo in 2001. In 2002
Oksana was invited to pursue a Master of Music in Piano
Performance Degree at Wayne State University, Detroit,
MI, where she was offered a full tuition scholarship and
a Young Artist Fellowship for an outstanding
performance. Upon completion of the degree Oksana
came to Cleveland in order to study at The Cleveland
Institute of Music, where she received her second Master
of Music Degree in Collaborative Piano and Chamber
Music. Next to extensively participating in
performances of solo and chamber music, as well as
collaboration with vocalists and instrumentalists in the
Cleveland area, Oksana has devoted a great amount of
time to teaching and educating students in all aspects
of piano playing, music theory, and history.
Oksana is a registered teacher with The Royal
Conservatory of Music, which offers an opportunity for
accreditation of students though the Conservatory exams,
if such is sought after. Oksana is committed to
helping young people to grow as musicians, through
providing a nurturing environment, focused and energized
instructions that would motivate students to perform at
personal-based level, and foster a life-long
appreciation for music. Oksana also holds a
position of a Music Director at the Fowler's Mill
Christian Church in Chardon, OH.

Jonathan Roberts:

Jonathan Roberts, originally from RI, holds a Master of Music
Degree in piano performance from the Cleveland Institute of music as well as two bachelors
degrees from the University of New Hampshire; a Bachelor of Arts degree in piano performance
and a Bachelor of Music degree in music education. With his formal training beginning at the
age of 7, Jonathan's major teachers have included Kathy Czerny, Irina Tchantceva, Arlene Kies,
and Kathryn Brown. Major awards have included a CIM institutional scholarship, UNH presidential
scholarship, and UNH music scholarhip. Jonathan has also been featured as soloist with the
Ocean State Chamber Orchestra and the University of New Hampshire Wind Symphony. Jonathan maintains
an active teaching and performing career throughout the Cleveland area, performing solo and chamber
recitals, particularly as a member of the Kamikaze Duo with violinist Amanda Smith. Jonathan is
currently continuing his professional development as soloist and collaborator in the Professional
Studies program at the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Leo Coach:

Leo studied harmony and composition with the noted
Jazz arranger and author, Phil Rizzo. Subsequently he has been involved with the Creative Music
Studio in Woodstock, N.Y., with such artists as Anthony Braxton, Oliver Lake, Karl Berger and Carla
Bley. He also studied with pianist Jaki Byard, formerly of the Charles Mingus group, at his
studio in Hollis, N.Y.
Leo has performed solo and ensemble concerts at Indiana University, Ohio University and Marietta
University and other concert and club performances throughout the Mid-West. He was a member
of Eneke Experimental Arts in Tucson, Arizona. Eneke, a performing arts ensemble, was the
brainchild of Ajule Rutlin, co-founder of the Black Artists Group of St. Louis. With Eneke,
he toured the Southwest in concerts featuring such artists as Henry Threadgill, Oliver Lake,
Douglas Ewart and others.
After arriving in Cleveland, Leo founded The Contemporary Music Coalition and has done concerts
at Kool Jazz Festival, The Tri-C Jazz Fest, the Eneke Festival and Stifel Arts Jazz Series.
Leo has been performing in Europe since 1991. Performance highlights include the Ljubljana
Jazz Festival, the Jazz Lent Music Festival, a national radio simulcast performance from the Club
Gajo in Slovenia; The Custard Factory Music Series in Birmingham, England and at Club 54 in
Heidelberg, Germany.
Leo has been the recipient of major grants from The ArtsLink/Sorros Foundation, The Rockefeller
Foundation, Ohio Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, and the Slovenian Government for
composing, performing, and special projects both in the U.S. and Europe.
Leo is currently teaching courses in World Music at both Cleveland State University and Ursuline College since 1998.

Carly Kuhn:

Carly Kuhn, a
native of Lakewood, is our voice instructor. She
is a recent graduate of Wittenberg University with a
B.M. in Music Performance. While a student at
Wittenberg, Carly took a semester abroad to study music
history, performance, and culture in Vienna,
Austria. Carly has consistently been involved in
various musical theater productions, jazz performances,
and singing groups such as The Ladies Vocal Trio and The
Wittenberg Chamber Singers. Carly is a seasoned
instructor, and keep on the look out for Carly's
upcoming local performances.

Jeff Powers:

Mr. Powers has been an active
performer and teacher since the early 1980's - equally
adept in Classical and Blues/Rock. He has a BM in
Guitar Performance as well as a Master's Degree in
Guitar Performance from the Cleveland Institute of
Music. He has studied with Bob Pressler, Ralph
Russo, Christoph Harlan, and John Holmquist. After his
studies here in Cleveland, Jeff went abroad to study
Flamenco guitar with Marco Antonio Anguiano at the
Universidad Nacional Autanoma de Mexico in Mexico
City.
Jeff has taught at El Estudio
Bartok (Mexico) and Tri-C West while maintaining an
extensive studio locally. Giving regular solo
classical performances, he has also played in the Blues
Bands El Hangar Ambulante, Cold Shot, and Clarksdale. He
currently leads the band Dead Guy Blues. Additionally,
he has featured on several recordings and has hosted
various open mike/jam nights at The Winchester,
Sheehan's, Floodwater, McKenna's. Picture This and

Stephen J. Zombory:

|
Stephen J. Zombory, also a native
of Lakewood, will be teaching saxophones and
clarinets. With an emphasis on sax, he is a recent
graduate of Cleveland State University with a B.M. in
Music Performance. Stephen has also studied at
Youngstown State University. While a student
Stephen had been principal Saxophone in the CSU Wind and
Jazz ensembles and won positions in the IAJE
Intercollegiate "All-Star" Jazz Ensemble in 2002, 2005,
and 2006. His primary teachers include Dr. Kent
Englehardt, Dr. James Umble, and Howie Smith. He
has served as band leader as well as side man in various
performance situations including Guy Lombardo's Royal
Canadians, The Harry Hershey Orchestra, Latin jazz
projects Son Alegre and Grupo K-Non, as a local sub for
pop groups such as The Temptations, and has also been a
performer at Cedar Point. Currently Stephen is
very active as a private teacher, a freelance jazz
performer, and in Sammy Deleon y su Orquesta.
Stephen has many years of experience as a teacher in a
wide range of styles.

Roy King:

As one of the top players in the
Cleveland music scene over the past 30 years, we are
happy to introduce Mr. Roy King. Playing since
age 6, Roy's teachers include his father, Bob McKee,
Bill Certain, Emil Senole (Percussionist with Cleveland
Orchestra under George Szell), Tommy Edwards (one of the
best swing drummers this area has ever seen), and
Howard Brush (who also taught Jamie Haddad, Greg
Giancola, Jim Fox of The James Gang). He has
attended clinics given by Joe Morello, Louis Hayes, J.C.
Heard, Louis Belson, Roy Burns, Ed Shaunnessy, Jonathan
Moffet, Kenny Arnoff, Rogers Drums and Modern
Drummer.
Roy began his undergraduate
studies as a Music Education Major at Hiedelberg College
in Tiffin, OH. There he organized the Heidelberg
Jazz Ensemble. While at Heidelberg, Roy heard the
legendary Bill Dobbins, who led groups from Kent
State. This prompted his decision to transfer to
Kent in order to work under Bill Dobbins, where he won
numerous prizes and competitions. Roy Graduated
from Kent State with a Bachelor of Science in Education,
Major in Music. He has worked in various school
systems throughout the area as a music teacher, although
the demand for him as a performer has limited him to
private teaching and gigging in recent
years.
Roy has performed with Leather
Soul, Pat Pace, The Idiots Convention Band, Black
Experience Band, Bobby Green, Amos Taylor, The Tom
Fitt Trio, The Gopher Broke Swing Band, Reckless
Abandon, Alex Bevan, Bill Nofttsinger, WSLR, Johnny
Gimbale, and Bucky Pitserelli. Roy currently works
as the full-time drummer for The Mike Petrone Trio
and Hillbilly Idol and also subs for Joe Hunter and Rock
Whermann. Roy has also performed with the
legendary Mose Allison as well as The Cleveland
Orchestra at Blossom with Kathleen Battle, the world
famous soprano, recording three CD’s.

Timothy Lane:

Teaching since 1999, Timothy
Lane has been performing nationally and worldwide since
1995. Timothy toured the East coast in 2001 with
Brian Wilson and Paul Simon as an opening act with
singer songwriter Michael Jantz. Studies abroad
include performances in Spain, France (F.I.M.U. 2006),
Holland, and Portugal. Tim Lane understands the
international language of music, but don’t ask him to
speak FRENCH!! Variety keeps things fresh, Timothy
has learned, in studying with: Bob McKee, (Cleveland
Jazz legend), Airto Moriera (Brazilian Legend), Greg
Bandy (Pharoah Sanders), Eric Patton (Columbus
University), Harry Damas (HarryHershey Big Band), and
Cleveland mentor Neil Chastain (Latin Jazz project,
Pureplex). Performances with SAFMOD dancers (CSU,
Columbus University, Erie College). Kicking with a
diversity of styles - teaching Celtic, Zydeco, Jazz,
Latin, Improv, and let’s not forget ROCK. All ages

Josue Gonzalez:

Josue Gonzalez-Davila was born in Fairfax,
Virginia. He started his musical studies on the violin at the age of three and cello at the age of
four. His family moved to Puerto Rico when he was five and he continued his musical studies at the PECN
(Special String Program for Children) of the Puerto Rico Conservatory. His primary teacher was Fermin
Segarra. He has also participated in master classes given by Rafael Figueroa, Jesus Morales and Luis
Biava Jr. He later became a member of the Puerto Rico Philharmonic for the 2001-2002 season. In 2002
he attended the Interlochen Arts Academy and studied with Cripsin Campbell. In 2005 he participated
in the junior division of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in which his piano trio
advanced to the semifinal round. Josue now attends the Cleveland Institute of Music where he studies
with Melissa Kraut. His summer experiences include the FOSJA festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico, The
Chautauqua Summer School of Music and most recently the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and the Mimir
Chamber Music Festival with the Iannis quartet. As a founding member of the Iannis quartet he has
collaborated with members of the Cavani, Tokyo, Vermeer and Belcea Quartets, and with artists such
as Steven Doan, Earl Carlyss, Jesse Levin, Rodger Tapping, Andrew Jennings, William Preucil, etc.
The Iannis Quartet was a recent award winner at the 2008 Plowman Chamber Music Competition. (back)

Ayane Kozacas:
Violin

Ayane Kozasa, 21, is a senior at the Cleveland Institute of Music,
studying violin with William Preucil and viola with Kirsten Doctor. She started the violin at the age
of four and has won first prize in numerous competitions including the Kingsville International
Competition at which she was also awarded the Bach Prize, the Society of American Musicians Competition,
the Walgreens Concerto Competition, the Skokie Valley Symphony Concerto Competition, and the Chicago
Youth Concert Orchestra Concerto Competition. She is a prizewinner of the CIM Concerto Competition as
well as the prestigious Irving M. Klein International Competition.
Ms. Kozasa has attended many festivals including Meadmowmount School of Music, L’Academie de Musique de
Montpellier, and the Aspen Music Festival, to which she was awarded full scholarship. In December of 2004,
she was selected to participate in the New York String Orchestra Seminar, performing with Gil Shaham and
Leon Fleischer. An avid chamber musician, Ms. Kozasa was a part of the Aurora trio in 2004, participating
in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Association. During her freshman year at CIM, she was selected to
participate in the performance of Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire with soprano Lucy Shelton. Currently,
she is the violist in the Iannis quartet, formed in 2006. Their achievements include an invitation to the
Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, studying with many highly distinguished artists including Tokyo String
Quartet and the Vermeer Quartet. Most recently, they won an award at the Plowman Chamber Music Competition.

Chris Scott:

Chris Scott is an
eclectic musician, whose tastes, knowledge, and
experience span everything from orchestral music to jazz
to experimental electronica. He is an active
performer, composer, arranger, and educator in
Cleveland's rich music scene.
Chris earned his Bachelor of Music degree at Youngstown
State University, where he studied trumpet with
Christopher Krummel. He was also involved in YSU's
venerable jazz program, performing on their jazz
ensemble's studio album, "Burnin'". After
college, Chris went on to be a show band musician on
Carnival Cruise Line's fleet of pleasure cruising
vessels.
In Cleveland, Chris was a
founding member and songwriter for the jazz/electronic
groups Solrae and Luxure. He currently performs
with Cleveland's premiere wedding and special event
band, "Twist!". He has also been a guest performer
with Akron based funk group "Costley
Court".
Chris's teaching experience
is equally diverse. He has been a music educator
in the Cleveland and Euclid public school systems,
teaching students from Kindergarten through high school
in every kind of musical discipline. Chris has
also taught private trumpet lessons in many different
settings, including Cuyahoga Community College's
"Community Music Program". (back)

Bryan Kennard:

Bryan Kennard is our Classical and Jazz Flute instructor.
Bryan is a Cleveland native and grew up with a diverse musical background. He recalls the sounds of folk,
bluegrass, rock, and classical music throughout his childhood before he began taking piano lessons in elementary
school. In high school, Bryan began to study flute and apply what he learned in classical, bluegrass, and jazz
settings.
Bryan attended Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA to earn his Bachelor of Music in Music Education.
He studied flute with Wendy Webb Kumer and composition with Dr. Albert Glinsky. While at Mercyhurst, he took
advantage of the many performing opportunities that were available to him. After graduation, he continued his
education at Youngstown State University, where he received his Master of Music in Flute Performance. At YSU,
Bryan was employed as the Graduate Assistant in Jazz Studies, which allowed him to work closely with the jazz faculty,
Dr. Kent Engelhardt, Dr. Dave Morgan, and Dan Murphy. His flute studies were guided by Dr. Kathryn Thomas Umble.
An active performer and recitalist, Bryan has performed extensively throughout the region. He has studied
jazz flute with Ali Ryerson and Holly Hofmann. Additional flute instructors include George Pope, Amy Porter,
Tatjana Ruhland, and Stephen Schultz. Bryan has performed and recorded with YSU's Frank Zappa Ensemble, as well
as with the Cleveland based bluegrass group, Brand New Hat. He is a founding member of an experimental new music
ensemble, AcoustiCombo, and a composer in both jazz and classical genres.
